TalkTalk's current 'Essentials' Broadband and Phone Package now offers:
  • Unlimited Downloads/Uploads (subject to their 'Fair Use' agreement which basically slows you down a bit at peak times)
  • Unlimited evening/weekend calls to UK landlines
  • Unlimited anytime calls to other TalkTalk customers
  • Free Caller Display

Costs:
  • 'Value' Line Rental: £9.50 per month (if you pay one year's amount up front)
  • Broadband: £6.50 per month (£4.50 per month for 12 months if you sign up to a new contract)

£14 (then £16) a month seems pretty good value to me for combined line rental/unlimited broadband package.

I get pretty much that same deal via AOL Uk which IS Talk Talk now anyway.

I pay £12.99 and have had unlimited bandwidth since 2005 and a monthly McAfee subscription.  I can't remember the last time I paid for a phone call.

Negotiate, you can always get a few quid off.  The advantage of living in these parts is that nobody can provide a worse service than anyone else because of the limitations of the phone line anyway.  So unlimited downloads has always been my primary concern, hence I've been with the same provider for 8 years or so now.

Well, when you only have incoming pay-by-the-minute phone numbers...

Actually Straummy is on to something there.  Mine doesn't include line rental.

That's it, I'm going to moan about it now you see if I don't get a price match and a brand new router out of this.

Not that there's anything wrong with my current router, it's just the principal of the thing you understand.

Jon, what I liked about TalkTalk was when I changed from BT, I only had to sign up for 12 months - flat rate £6.50 a month for broadband - none of this 18 month deal half price for 6 months then full price afterwards palaver. There was also a set changeover fee of around £30 which was upfront and clear from the start, and the line rental was exactly the same as BT. It seemed a good deal for me because it was 40GB limit, which compared to the 5GB BT were charging me £18 for (not including line rental) seemed like a bargain. Plus the additional benefits of free weekend calls and free caller display etc sold it me.

And once my 12 months contract was up, I didn't have to renew my package with them, they just kept me on a rolling contract I could get out of anytime. In other words, as long as they got the direct debit every month I continued to receive the service.

About this time last year though, they started the 'Essentials' package - the broadband still cost £6.50 a month, but you had the option to pay a year's line rental in advance which worked out around £9 a month instead of around £14. However, as this advance payment was non-refundable, it's effectively a 12 month contract you're taking on.

This year, the Essentials package has changed to include unlimited broadband.

The line rental I payed up front last year expires at the end of October, and I'm not absolutely sure as yet if the line rental will be payable in advance again to get it for the £9.50 a month I mentioned in my OP. If it is, I'll just 'officially' accept a new contract with them and get the broadband discounted to £4.50 too.
