A lot of stuff I'll put in a fill on the 2nd to last measure and pile the drums up in piano roll to all hit on "one"....like mentioned above.  A little off topic...I'll so something similar to accent specific beats in a song too... add the kick and snare to those beats needing a little more oomph

There is a danger of programming impossible parts i.e. more than 2 hits with feet/arms simultaneously, so you do indeed have to think like a drummer.
 
Unless of course your virtual band has 2 drummers

I've actually never worried about that, came up with MIDI patterns that I thought were 'better' most of the time as well. Maybe they had some weird-o trigger setup like the guy in Def Lepard.  The "Rule" of impossible parts just got voted out of the music constitution, in my govt.
