I am guessing that it is because he can, it is his skin and he can do as he pleases. 

Personally I find them interesting artworks but would never have one done.  Mostly pointless in my case no one would see through the fur.

As you should. That's part of the process. I've never known anyone that tried to dull the pain and I don't think there's anything out there that could.

I have one right about where the lowest part of the snake and the wing fall. Yeah.  Ow.  But mine is much smaller.  And a bit more girl-y. Yours is much cooler. :)
