You'd think they'd have learned after the Beta/8-Track debacle.

And I'm not sure if VinylJunkie was perhaps just being sarcastic because of the temptation of having to buy more 'new' music or if he's just against the clogging up of bandwith with extensive lists?

VJ?

Patrick

Not exactly. Can't stand Prog Rock - simple as that.

I don't blame you, and it is one of the reasons why I do not like to use the term itself ... specially when so much of it is just loudness with an effect ... well, at least if you unplug Dream Theater you will get lots of notes from a guitar and a bass ... but not sure about most of the others out there, specially some of the metal ones, that are just using loudness and an effect ... and calling themselves progressive.

But music is music ... the only thing I don't like is the label. I don't call YES, progressive at all ... I call them ... MUSIC ... by YES, and that is an issue that I have had for the longest time in the ProgArchives board, because in the end, they do not believe that the youngsters, and all of us here are composers ... instead of just idiots looking for a hit in our lifetimes! There is no respect for many of those folks whose work is far more important, valuable, and defined, than at least 50% of all the classical music composers in "music history"!

It's about the music and its ability to color your mind ... the rest, and specially a label is usually defined after you're dead ... so seeing these definitions now is rather pre-sumptuous and stupid!

Ohh btw ... I still ahve more LP's than CD's!

And I...  gave away over 1,500 (vinyl) albums.  I sold about 500 and got all of $200 for them - the rest were declared pretty much worthless licorice pizzas.

NOW they would have been worth quite a bit, but I didn't want them melting in a storage unit somewhere at the time.  Of course, my current (overly expensive) storage unit has a LOT of printer paper boxes filled with my CD's since, at least right now, after they get sucked into the PC, I don't need 'em.  Not sure if it's a good thing or not (nor do I care), but I've always been all about the music with little caring left over for the art, information and (usually) the lyrics, if any.  It's just the way I am!  There's quite a bit of music that I listen to over and over that I might be able to tell you who the artist is, but most of the time I don't even know or remember what the names of the songs are!

Back when I lived down in Orange County, I had an entire wall turned into a media closet (about 6" deep, floor to ceiling).

It started as just one section that I designed myself, then another one was added (can't find a pic of the final):

I built this "Stonehenge" looking shelf for the top of my bigscreen so that I could put multiple layers of players on it.  I had three of the Sony 400 CD Jukeboxes (all daisy chained and controled by one remote) - like this:

Along with two of their 300 CD Jukeboxes and a 200 on a different remote.  My parents inherited an older 200 as I kept upgrading trying to keep up (and failing).  Here's what my TV looked like without the Stonehenge and the extra players (it added two more levels):

Now, my mom has one big screen TV, my business partner has a smaller one and the rest have been sold.  All of my CD's are in storage and my GOOD stereo is also long gone.  I just sit in my little bedroom with an insane amount of music on my PC which can then be downloaded in related large packets to my four iPOD's.  The space savings is ridiculous!  Oh well, life goes on.

So that means you know my hangouts in those days ... Tower on the Strip in the early days had all the CAN, Peter Hammill and some oddities. Moby Disk was on Victory Blvd before they moved across 101 to Ventura Blvd, The Warehouse in Westwood had the largest selection of classical music, jazz and soundtracks and spoken word (plays and such!!!) ... for us to be able to get the stuff that we got.

Concerts I missed along the way ...

Seventh Wave came through town with 7 keyboard players. was too busy at UCSB.

Caravan did a set of shows at the Troubadour ... according to some folks it was a magnificent evening even though Pye was apparently sick, and they stuck to mostly instrumentals.

Gentle Giant ... at the time, although I appreciated their incredible musicianship, this was not one of my favorites. Still isn't, but I love playing their stuff. Freehand days.

King Crimson ... the USA tour. Somehow, I did not think that KC live would be an intersting band. I thought they had already lost the "spokesperson" for our generation and its importance, and when that happened I lost interest in the band. Missed Fripp a couple of times even here in Portland. Would not mind seeing him, but only if its him and his guitar and no guests ... he's much more interesting as a person by himself than he is within a band context.

Golden Earring ... as many shows as they did around their Moontan/Switch era, I never got to see them. Word was that they were not as tight in concert as they were on the album. Roye Albrighton (Nektar -- did tour with GE with over 50 dates!) said once that it was not fun coming on stage after Golden Earring as the audience had already heard the hit and too many folks left!

Focus ... missed a couple of chances. Broke on one and in school the other.

Orange County Pedro.   Definitely NOT Los Angeles!  (Which is at least 45 miles north.)  I hated going up that way, but I had a lot of friends playing in bands up there...
