There are untalented, ignorant and arrogant non-reading musicians too. So why make this about musicians who read versus those who can't?

It is unfortunate that the original messages were not quoted, it makes for a very strange thread.

And that's different from the other threads in the Coffee House how?

...One thing doesn't exclude the other, in that form it's usually a question posed by people that feel insecure about having no musical education. I you feel like that then get some education, otherwise keep making slamming tracks and just enjoy doing so. Being able to read and write though will certainly provide you with more opportunities for getting work whatever language you choose to adopt.

Agreed.

It really depends on what you are doing and who you are doing it with. If you are doing Beethoven's 9th, or Roll Over Beethoven, yeah ... you're gonna have to do the note per note thing, and not variate a whole lot ... because your audience is gonna grade you on how many notes you missed ... too many and you are a bum!

But if you are doing original music ... who the hell, can tell if you are improvising or not? ... there is no point of reference!

And this, above all else, is the main reason why I tell people to not do anything that is not of their own ... you are automatically an idiot and a bum and can not gain a nickel, even if your version is better than the original, which happens many times.

But there are way too many college/school folks that still think that their scores is the only music there is ... no girls for you! That's ok ... get that paper degree. We'll still see you on the street looking for a job!

Don't learn how to read notes and remember you won't play as well as some others who can add MIDI notes on a staff and have the computer able to play music that you and others can not. It would take a concert pianist perhaps or someone well versed already famous and most people left in the dust.

<sigh>

Here we go again...

When one cannot read, there are many types of music one cannot perform or create (and yes, with sample libraries like VSL, and the like, people still create them).

OTOH, without the ability to improvise, or play well by ear, there are also many types of music that one cannot perform or create.

I find it very sad when an individual takes it upon himself to blast either one or the other.  I do find it interesting that the "blast" usually regards something the "blaster" does not have the skill set to perform/create.  Since one doesn't have the skill set, that music must be worthless.

What are these "notes" thingies I hear so much about?
