  • Serious Crash last night *UPDATE*

Last night, the machine was switched on with Sonar X2 the only running application.

I wasn’t working on a project at the time, the pc was just idling when it suddenly & without warning flashed up a Blue Screen Of Death – but it wasn’t a normal BSOD – all of the graphics were extremely distorted making it impossible to read the BSOD texts.

I left it for about 30 minutes before shutting the machine down. I left it for a while, switched it back on, and even when loading the BIOS the graphics were still distorted.

Windows tried to launch, but it then went into a self-diagnostic routine at the end of which I could just make out the message that stated “Windows cannot repair this computer automatically”

The machine is still under warranty and I'm waiting for them to get back to me, but it seems to me that as a minimum, the graphics cards has gone kaput, my worry is, what else did it drag down with it.

Anyone seen anything like this before?

A truly pissed off Jonesey

As you have an i7 CPU, are you using the internal Intel HD4000 graphics or a separate video card?   I had a problem with my new i7 3770 CPU, the DVI graphics output died.  The VGA still worked as I had an older monitor that was VGA and able to troubleshoot.   I eventually installed a separate video card.

However, I've had crashes that along with whatever happened to cause the PC crash also corrupt the hard drive.  Luckily scandisk fixed the hard drive problems, otherwise I would have had to rebuild the hard drive from my Acronis backup.

Thanks for replying

I'm using a separate video card but it's quite an old one as my monitors aren't HDMI or DVI-D or anything like that.

I have seen that a few times and each time resulted in a new video card. I once got a few more months out of one by removing the HS/fan and resetting with arctic silver but the problem came back. If you're using a fancy accelerated screen saver, those are video card killers IMO. Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks Grant.

No screensavers here - just a fancy X2 wallpaper!

I've been in touch with the people who built the system, and it looks like I'm going to have to box it up and get it sent back to them for repair.

Glad I backed up all my projects on Saturday (I've not done a lot since then)

Same thing happened to me and it was the video card. Replaced it and everything was fine.

If your i7 CPU has built in video, remove the video card and use the built in video (if your motherboard has a VGA connector).  That will tell you if the problem was the video card or something else.
