This is a really fantastic two and a half hour video on mixing by Dave Gibson. It's very dated looking and a bit weird, but there is some very helpful stuff in here for anyone thinking of taking a video mixing course. The dated visuals are pretty amusing

About ten minutes into it. No idea whether it's going to tell me anything useful or not so far, but I'm definitely very entertained.

He's onto phasing effects now. This is quite clearly a man with an excellent pot dealer.

Ha, amazing: "When used at Grateful Dead concerts, the  crowd wonders if the effect is coming from INSIDE THEIR HEADS".

Very entertaining indeed! Thanks, sharke.

It appears to be an animated version of Gibson's book, which I browsed one day at the bookstore and put back onto the shelf because it just seemed like an impossible task to explain the images a mixer (or musician) sees in his head. The concept's good, though. Everybody's got a touch of synesthesia. Everybody "sees" music in their mind's eye. Unfortunately, everybody sees something a little different.

I liked his point about perceiving high frequencies as physically "higher" in the mix and low frequencies "lower." Not many mixing tutorials I've read or watched mention this, or the reasons why, but it's a very clear phenomenon for me especially when wearing headphones.

The visuals in this video are great though. Takes me back to an earlier time of computing (which wasn't that long ago really).

Recently somebody posted a query looking for resources for beginners. I hope that poster sees this thread because I can't think of a better place for a beginner to begin than with this video.

And continuing on the "dated looking but useful resource for beginners" theme, here's another gem, this time a two part into to synthesis. It's worth watching for the awesome intro music alone.

More on David Gibson. Hunting around I found what appears to be his website. I was amused to find that the visuals don't appear to have moved on from the time that video was made (1990 or so?).

It pushes his "virtual mixing" software which seems to be the same 3D representation of mixes seen in the video, only you can mix by using a virtual reality glove to "grab" mix elements and move them around.

I'm curious as to how old this website is because it looks like it was frozen in time. He has his email address with @'s written as (at) and .'s written as (dot), just like the old days. However it appears that it's still updated because it talks about upcoming classes etc.

I'm not mocking the guy, I think his video is fantastic, I'm just kind of amused by the whole retro-web feel of it all.
