  • Why do people think NOW that our DAW will "stop working"

Theres no time bomb in it, as long as you are running a stable release, and can deal with the bugs up to now, since they wont get fixed.

Having said that, I know when MS does updates it could/will  break the CW products and any VSTs .

So does one stop MS updates(if you can figure a way out of the automated update scheme) or take our luck and ride it as long as we can, or look for other daws . Harrison Mixbuss maybe.

I think the main worry is Windows 10 updates.

Otherwise I will be using SONAR to the bitter end...

You could have Sonar on a machine disconnected from the 'net. It'll just be frozen in time.

When SONAR stops functioning in ways more than I can bear Studio One 3 Pro will likely be my next move. Maybe Reaper.

I'll continue with Mixbus as my mix/master environment.

I still run a 15+ year old copy of Photoshop and it runs beautifully, though installing on new machines is a bit of a pain.

I'm planning on doing just that on my Win7 machine mate.

I have one piece of ancient (but critical) software for which I actually had to find a floppy drive last time I configured a new computer, because I needed the authorization that was on the floppy. But I was at least able to do it. Nowadays authorizations are all server-based and once they're shut down that's it (see: Kjaerhus).

And this is what'll most likely be the issue down the road: re-authorizations. They'll keep the servers up for awhile, but somebody has to pay for that, and it won't be Gibson. So even though I plan to keep using SONAR for the immediate future, eventually there will be a new computer in that future.

The kindest thing CW could do now is post unprotected versions of everything as a parting gift, but I doubt that'll happen.

I can't see how that could hurt, after all, I doubt they'll be selling any new copies.
