I recently had a friend mix my new album. Some of the mix decisions he made inspired me to overdub new ideas, which really added to my songs. He wasn't part of the initial composition, but he certainly played a big part in the end result.

Yes. A good engineer should know when a mix is getting congested because an arrangement is crowded. A mute button can do wonders!
