I am able to record Cakewalk Sound Center synths, but am not able to record SI-Drum kit for arguments sake.
I am able to hear the drums playback over my output, but no recording capabilities.
Also noticed that the waveform was not present while recording CSC synths unlike the way it works when I am recording an actual instrument.
Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks and cheers,

Those VSTis work exactly the same way. What are you doing differently with SI-drums? How are you recording?

MIDI is only control data, and no audio file is created when you record the soft synths, that's why you can only see waveform if you enable waveform preview. That preview waveform is not something you can edit like audio clips, because an audio clip is created only if you freeze the synth or bounce to track.

Thank you for your reply....
I am not doing anything differently to my knowledge.
I am attempting to record by inserting a synth track using instructions provided.
with the interface (SI - drum kit for arg's sake) up I hit the cymbal.  It registers on the track input meters and is output to my system speakers, but when I arm the track and do the same nothing is recorded.
However, as mentioned when I insert softsynth->cakewalk sound center-> select drum kit, I am able to play instruments and am able to record them.
Thanks again and cheers,

Welcome to the forum.
How are you 'playing' the instruments?

You should be able to either FREEZE the drum synth or BOUNCE it. Either will give you a "hard copy" wave.

You do not "ARM" the audio track to record a synth. You do however arm the midi source track for the synth to record the midi data as it is played or inputted from the midi controller. You must press the record button and see the time line moving as it records.

Try using the CSC drum kit to record the drum midi and then simply switch the synth to SI-drums.... see if that works.... that's a work around to see if SI reads the recorded midi data....

you should be able to record the midi regardless of the synth.

To further clarify: You can not record anything by clicking the drum pictures in the user interface.

Yep - in addition to arming the track, you then need to hit 'R' to start recording, and trigger the corresponding hits via your keyboard/controller/drum pad etc

GregM - what's your input Midi Channel and does that correspond to your Midi controller (as in a keyboard). If you press a key in the lower range of your keyboard you should hear (with input monitor on) the drum sounds as you touch the keys. You should then be able to record if that's working.

Greg, while this particular question is fairly generic (synth behavior is pretty consistent), it will be helpful if you can list your Sonar version and system specs in your signature. If we know what you are working with, it is much easier to give you a direct answer.
Stick with it, and good luck.
