Part 1:  A thread counter shows how many views a thread has had.
 
Part 2:  It only goes up.
 
Part 3 (This is for the question you probably should have asked, i.e., "What thread is gone?"):  Bitflipper posted a topic that "someone" was artificially boosting the thread view count on one or more topics.  It (for some mind boggling reason) apparently upset one or more members so he asked it to stop while implying he knew who was doing it.  Things inevitably spiraled downwards from there then the entire topic vanished in a puff of dried fertilizer.

It was speculated on for a while and the closest to a logical "reason" was that since the forum can be sorted by "Mosted Viewed" that someone was gaming that little aspect... which I don't think anyone ever uses anyway (I sure don't).
 
Or maybe it's a Google thing to bump up the thread in its search rankings... but that again seems hardly worth the effort.
