I ran an experiment
I opened this thread up in a broswer
I hit the F5 key three times

the views incremented 3 times

so why the blazes wood anybody want to do that or have the time

dumb

Not endorsing it, but if one sorted a forum by views it's a way of bumping one's own thread.

The FSF has bumps all over it.

A visit to the Doc may be in order.

So, basically the forum software is stoopid?

SFS.

Now you'd think forum software as expensive as this would be intelligent enough to count "unique" views instead of just every time the frigging page gets loaded. What a crock. Reminds me of early search engines that weren't clever enough to identify that when a page had "DISCOUNT JEWELRY" written 600 times in succession that it was probably keyword stuffing.

Bummer, another reason why sleeping isn't all it's cracked up to be, you can miss out on to much stuff.

So you think it's worth using processing power doing compares on every thread hit in order to solve this "problem"?

James,

Do you happen to know where I can get cheap flights?

Well otherwise, what exactly is the point of a view counter? It's not as if counting unique views is out of the ordinary. Look at Google Analytics, for example. It captures a ridiculous amount of data about the browsing behavior of people on your site, and unique views are an integral part of it.

Without it, the counter is pointless. What if I'm looking at a thread, and then I refresh the page to see if there have been any updates? Should that count as another "view"?

I'm still a little in the dark here.

In fact, one might expect me to utter, "I don't get it" and add the "" confuzzled emotimacon.

But if George has it right and it's all about the repeated hitting of the F5 refresh thang, wouldn't that be anonymous?

Does one actually leave an tell-tale internet/cyber* calling card when one refreshes a page?

Enquiring minds and all that.

* I use these words as I ain't got a feckin' clue what I'm rambling on about
