Isn't putting out a country album more an admission of failure than anything else.....?

My girl left me....
My dog died......
My truck went and broke down on me......
I gosh darn broke my geetar when I slipped off the porch step...

These days its more about drinking beer with girls in the back of pickup trucks.

Oh, so it's kinda like country music, the prequel, now.....

The days before the girl left and the truck broke down.

I always remember hearing that if you played a country song backwards, the girlfriend returns, the truck runs and the dog isn't dead.

Now, if you've heard one country song, you've heard them all.

I'm not a fan, but I would not call him that.

I might call him a grungebagger, though:

The thing about countrybagging is that it is precisely about inauthenticity.  It's about doing something not because you love it, but because you want to cash in.

Exactly. GB was pretty proud of having sold more records than anybody except the Beatles but the blatantly bogus persona of 'Chris Gaines' was viewed as a pathetic attempt to increase the depth of his crossover market to beat that.

Sure, it's only opinion and all props to anyone who can sell that many records but can't think of a single "authentic country artist" that would have even considered such a move.

Apparently so, at least for the newer material:

Does that mean that Taylor Swift is a preemptive countrybagger?

We;ve always known that music was a universal language.  Now the walls are coming crashing down.  All those ridiculous ratings and genre descriptions are passe.  Oui, Oui.

Always considered Taylor Swift to be a pop singer-songwriter, but never country.

Wondering what that makes Ryan Adams since he covered an entire album of hers?

Well she was marketed as country, even though you or I might not have considered her as such.

As for Ryan Adams, I guess it comes down to what you think his motives were.  Maybe it was a publicity stunt, maybe he lost a bet, maybe he was trying to work through writers block, maybe he was just following a crazy idea.  Who knows, maybe he really does like her music.
