EDIT*** I just uploaded a new version.  Mostly I stood back farther from the mic and I also ran it through Ozone to try to widen the sound.  Is it any better?

Well, I finally got around to recording my friends' rain stick.  In the interest of neighborliness, I thought I'd post it here (can't figure out exactly WHERE to post it)...in case anyone's interested in downloading it.  This is just an mp3.  I'm not real familiar with Dropbox, but I suppose that's the place to upload a .wav?  Anyway, if you care...here it is:

And if there's a better way to record it and a different thing to DO with it, let me know.  I have no idea...just always thought it was a cool sound and I wanted to record it before they move.

Also, sort of unrelated...there used to be an icon for adding URL's here, which I can't find anymore.  It's probably right in front of my face, but these eyes are old and this brain is tired.

Yes, it is a cool sound. I had to get mine out for a sound check comparison.
Wouldn't you know, I happen to have one.
Try backing the mic off a bit. You have the sound, but the subtle nuances seem to be getting a little lost. There is a softness to the sound that seems to be getting overrun by the loudness/ close proximity of the mic. Also, the room seems to be somewhat live, and you are getting quite a bit of that. Something like a walk-in closet full of clothes would be good for this.
You can split the recording into separate wav files, and trigger them with various samplers you have.

+1 to the above. I'd also add....using two or more mic's so you'd have this sound in stereo while in the closet. Then, maybe open the door and have mic's in the room to pick up some ambience just "to have". Good job on the recording though Janet...it sounds like a good capture, but like Robert mentioned, it's a bit loud due to being close mic'd. This is good though, but 2 more mics along with it not so close up would have been nice...then you mix them all and it comes to life.

The softness Robert mentions is important for this for sure.....yours sounds a bit like "Torrential Stick" though....hahaha...which is cool because, well, that doesn't really exist so we can call this one "The Janet T Stick". :) Honest though...all laughing and joking aside, I do like the quality of the print here as far as eq and capturing the actual sound. I'd listen to what Robert has offered as well as maybe adding a few mic's on each side (like having two ears which you'd pan) so that the sound would be less mono and would allow for some room to come into play. Nice job Janet....hope all is well, haven't talked to you in a long time. :)

To answer the other question about URLs. If you highlight some text, two greyed out icons on the right-hand side of the 2nd toolbar become active, they are link and unlink. Click on link and a URL dialog will popup. Add the URL and the highlighted text will have the link added to it.

Thanks everyone!  It's good to hear from you especially, Bob - long time no see!  And Danny...yes, it has been a long time!  Herb, see below...And Robby...yeah, I think so too!  Scook...thanks!

So, more than one mic, huh?  Well, that might be a little much for this equipment- and know-how-challenged recording star, but we'll see.  Recording in stereo I can handle though.  Not sure why I put it on mono.  A closet full of clothes might be tough, though, since there wouldn't be room for the rain stick and the mic then. :)  So, we'll see.  I'll at least try it farther back.

Thanks a bunch and hopefully I'll get back at it before my friends leave! :)

Scook...OK, I've highlighted a URL on a website, but those two icons still don't become active.  What am I missing?

If you just want to add a URL to your post, you can copy and paste it directly into the post. Otherwise, after highlighting and copying the URL, then highlight some text in your post. That will cause the link/unlink icons to become active. Click the link icon and paste the URL into the popup dialog created by the clicking the link icon.
