"Anubis"

Not exactly a ringing endorsement. On the other hand the Samsung 830 series consistently gets five eggs .

I see what you mean. Although reviews on sites such as Newegg is not something I take very seriously (especially when it's all over the map so to speak). I'll be visiting OCZ's forums to get a better handle on what's being reported though. Thanks for the link.

If you are experienced with PCs... some of those "reviews" are comical.

Funnily enough a common fault that many reviewers have cited is the same problem the OP here had as well.

Not being recognized by the BIOS.  Normally when something is showing up with common symptoms being reported it makes me very wary.

Look at Intel go though!!!

Given that many people report success with either Intel or Crucial M4 SSD's, but many problems with OCZ...

What brand is the failed drive?

I have 5 ocz ssds various sizes and types (vertex 2 and 3). Never a failure or problem with some 2 years old. Use one for boot so it gets used quite a bit.
Had one Intel and it failed in 3 weeks. Sent it back and got full refund which surprised me.

It sounds like failures are just bad luck for all the brands.

Silicon Audio
Nobody here has mentioned the fact that their are two SSD technologies. SLC and MLC (single layer cell & multi layer cell).

SLC drives are more expensive, but faster and much more reliable.  One of the reasons they cost more is that SLC NAND chips are lower density, which means larger/more chips.

Most SSDs for sale seem to be MLC, which are slower and much less reliable.  I have used both.  Having recently put a SLC based SSD in my laptop, I can report that the resulting performance boost on the drive, which obviously also serves as the boot drive, is night and day.

Keep in mind though that SSDs aren't a silver bullet.  Sustained sequential writes are actually significantly slower on an SSD vs a traditional magnetic platter drive.  For that reason, even if they get bigger and cheaper, I would not use one to record audio to.

Do you have a local store?
If so, I'd go in person... and talk to a manager.

I did talk to a manager...he told me to go home and he'd call me....... he never called.

Was the "manager" the top person? If not, I'd go for the top person at the store as he (or she) is the one that can really make a decision.
