I don't get the big deal with this guy, everyone seems to rave about him though.

Kind of a banal barnacle?

Guess I can hear it now. My next question is, is he one of Santa's little helpers?

I saw that show too (DVR'd) last night.

I'm 99% sure it's a 6 string bass though I'd not seen one before.

First saw one being played by Simon Fitzpatrick from Carl Palmers ELP legacy band a couple of years ago. Pretty effective considering this is a guitar, bass, drums trio playing ELP.

Here Simon being flash.

7 grand? Yikes, that's over a thousand dollars per string! Assuming strings come with it; maybe they're sold separately.

I'll stick with keys. Even at the high end, you still get 73 or 88 of them for half that price.

Bit,

A brand new Alembic Series I bass is $21K. A Series II is $26K. Those are 4 string. 6 Strings are 22.6K and 28.1K respectively.

Want an Alembic standup bass? It's called a Classico. Staring at $26K going up to $36.5K.
