Never encountered or heard of this problem before but something has changed with my knowing on one of my drives and
now when windows loads it gets to a screen saying, "windows is preparing your desktop" at which point it hangs for 3 to 4 minutes.
Then all I get is a blue screen. Not blue screen of death mind, just a plain dark (ish) blue screen.
Tried to run the windows repair from the installer disk, it said repair has found errors and will now attempt to fix them.
Great I thought, repair almost never works for me and it didn't let me down this time either.
It did absolutely nothing like it always does. Set bios back to fail safe defaults but still the same.
Anyone experienced this before and did you find a solution without reinstalling windows?
I'm rapidly arriving at that point and the end of my tether is within sight

Hi Steve,

If the OS was installed with the HD controller in AHCI mode... and it was later changed to IDE mode (from resetting BIOS setup defaults), that would cause a similar issue.
Go into the BIOS and change the HD controller to AHCI mode... and see if the OS boots as normal.

Thanks Jim
I know all the drives are currently set to IDE mode but I'll have to have a look for the AHCI when I get home tonight or tomorrow.

Where (or under what) do I find the HD controller?

Also, I don't know if it's of any relevance but I have two drives, one with windows 7 32 bit and another with windows 7 64 bit. The 32 bit windows boots up fine.
Cheers

Steve

Ok I checked and it is set to AHCI mode so I'm back to square one.

Thanks for trying, not sure where to go from here.

Check your desktop folder. See what's in there. Or see if there IS a desktop folder. I use ObjectDock Plus on my desktop. Once upon a time there was a flaw in that and I got the same symptoms as you.

Darn, perhaps I should have held my horses before going ahead and re-installing windows. I just saw your post now that I've reformatted the drive and am back up and running.
Still a long way to go before I've got sonar and my plugs installed. Tried to use an image I backed up from acronis true image but it wouldn't boot.
Thanks for the tip anyhow John

I hope you have your BFD data on a separate drive Steve
