Hey guys.  I have used a Line 6 POD for some time to record guitar and bass.  I am not happy.  The tones feel thin and lacking.  I record via USB clean and then reamp later.  I just find the tones lacking in the lower mids.  They are fizzy on the top but that can be addressed with some EQ.

Is anyone satisfied with their tones from their PODs?  Do you have links to recordings that may impress.  If you are happy, any tips on how to get better recordings?

If you were once a POD user but moved on because you weren't satisfied, what do you use today?

I am very satisfied with the tones I get from my Line6 POD 2.0 red kidney bean. I use it for Guitar, Bass, Chapman Stick.
For a while I drifted into the virtual world - Guitar Rig, Amplitude, etc... but lately I've gone back to the POD.

i worked with the pod XT for quite a while...

and was never satisfied with it.

i was happiest with it, running it into a real tube amp, and using it only as a preamp, without cab and mic models....

but ultimately, i'm just a real amp kind of guy..
i want speaker excursion, volume, interaction with the guitar/room and cabinet, that's what is inspiring to me.

in addition:

i have found that i get far superior 'guitar' sounds using a palmer PDI-09 in conjunction with a weber mass lite attenuator, on a real tube amp (mesa boogie mark2b 60 watt) than i ever found with any modeler

i prefer high volume recording with a combination of sm57 and ksm44 or ADK Hamburg on a cab, close miced...

but the palmer wins out more often than not.

Do you have any music I could listen to?

I'm pretty happy with the tones I'm getting from my POD HD500. I am picky about how I set my tones up on it.Some of the guitar players here swear by adding a compressor to the front end of the pod. My model already has a compressor in it though.

I don't have one or two favorite tones, so sometimes the POD works well and other times it might be something else. I have never went overly crazy about my tones . Maybe I'm too easily satisfied with what I get, but I am a tweaker. There are a lot of settings in the average POD type box. If you factor in the signal levels and what you play it into there are a lot of variables. Two guys could have the same exact POD and be getting different tones from the same setting.

Others have mentioned that "fizz" sound at the top end. I don't hear it in my POD.

I think it's fun to record something and add plug-ins to the signal or copy tracks and comp them.  I might have a POD track and then add Guitar Rig to it or a one of the CLA guitar plug-ins. Depending on what it is or what type of sound I'm after. I recently read about Alice in Chains latest album and their  guitar tracks having 15 tracks...5 panned left, 5 panned right and 5 in the middle all different amps....from one guitar. This is nothing new, although phasing is an issue if not dealt with.

But the "fizz" you mention isn't something I have had...unless I don't hear it :) I like my POD a lot.

I had a listen.  Sounds good.  So what is the difference between a POD HD and XT?

The PODHD has the body to its tone I am looking for.  Frick!  Expensive hobby!
