My second song using Sonar Artist.
I could probably stand for some drum lessons, but I don't think they came out too bad. (It's hard being a one man band.)

I'm sure the more I mess with it the better it'll get. (I hope) Feel free to leave comments or tips that'll help me improve my mix's.

Thanks for listening.

Interesting piece. The drums actually seemed buried in the mix - maybe you kept them low on purpose due to worry that you need lessons? Feels like an intro to something

Interesting, a tad over compressed I think, the mix would benefit from some surgical EQ to cut the masking frequencies of individual instruments Bass/Kick, Guitars/Bass.  Some use of pan for stage positioning.  Perhaps some variation in the drum pattern bring it back to basics in a few places thus allow for a few musical clues for the changes.

Keep working at it the basis of the tune is there you just need to work on your mix skills.  Fortunately the majority of contributors to this forum will be only to happy to share such knowledge with you and guide you on your way.

Thanks for sharing I will keep my furry ears open for more of your work.

Hi James.
The playing sounds great to me and the drums are very well recorded. I agree they could come up in the mix a touch.
Props to you for playing everything - very cool.

This is the kind of feedback that I'm looking for. Thanks guys.

I'll play around with it and see if I can get some better sound out of it.
My master bus kept clipping and all signs were pointing to the drums and the bass guitar, (especially the snare) so that's where I started chopping.

I did put a compressor on the master bus (read about doing that somewhere) but I don't know what I'm doing with it, so I just used one of the pre-sets.

I do agree that the drums can use some variety. I'm working with the step sequencer and I get frustrated with it. I hear "boom, chicka, boom, chicka, boom, boom, boom..." in my head, but it doesn't come out that way on paper.
I probably could have found some loops that came with the software that would have worked out, but then I'd feel like I was cheating.

Thanks again!

Everything sounds fine -- a good foundation for future work -- liked the mix and the drums had some interesting things going on.  (I never thought you were playing real drums -- you did a good job sequencing them -- that's not easy.)  I look forward to hearing more...

The two biggest things that stood out to me were some timing issues between instruments, and that the overall mix could use a little more breathing room.  For the first one I find helpful to listen to solo'd tracks against the metronome just to find those parts that are noticeably out of time.   For the latter, since you've already identified the potential source I'd lower the faders on everything until the master bus isn't near clipping at any point, then add your compressor to see how the results sound.

All that said... I liked the tune!

If I couldn't guess you were a guitarist by your screen name, your mix would have betrayed you immediately! Ha ha.  All I can hear are guitars - drums are way down, and I'm guessing there's a bass line, it might be a little buried too then, but it might be these PC speakers.

The song sounds like an interesting piece.  Guitarists always program drums funny, don't worry about that, and the up tempo sounds good too.
