My wife asked if she could use my DAW computer to "print a few coupons". We have several other computers but mine is the easiest to use quickly and is hardwired into a printer. I told her I didn't really want her to do it but she insisted all she needed to do was print a few things.

When I got on the DAW that night I had a serious trojan infection, presumably from the coupon site. It was one of those trojans that won't allow any starting of virus software and has popups everywhere supposedly telling you that you have a virus but in reality if you go to its site you send money to Russia and never get it resolved. It pretty much cripples your computer and won't let you do anything.

I had a disk image in Acronis, although I seen this as a last resort. Here is what I did in case anyone else out there gets this bug. Boot into safe mode with networking by booting holding down F8. Download malwarebytes. Make sure it is really malwarebytes and not a fake site. Load and launch program. scan and remove virus. Simple as that. Whew!

Thankfully my wife has agreed to stay off the DAW from now on.

I have a paid copy of Malwarebytes.  It constantly monitors (along with the Antivirus software - Microsoft Security Essentials).

I've fixed several clients PC's that were infected with Malwarebytes.  It found things that other spyware programs couldn't.

Ha, that's awesome. So much cool stuff online that its easy to run into the bad. Glad we have tools like Malwarebytes to help us out when we are in a bind.

I will probably get the paid version. I believe in supporting people who write good software. I believe the paid version gives a few more decent perks too.

Amazingly Microsoft Security Essentials are one of the best virus program out there and its 100% free. Doesn't get in the way either or take any performance away from the computer. Very clean and nice simple virus and firewall program for average legit surfing on a computer with installed DAW.

It fully blocked 71.4 percent of new malware in our real-world tests............ In our zoo test, it detected 97.0 percent of known malware samples. With that result, it lags the competition--some packages detected over 99.9 percent of samples.
