Now THIS is a fred.

;-)

Anyway, I was getting obsessed with the production of Thriller (Quincy Jones) and plucking out/"analyzing" every element by ear and the theremin sound is genius (the whole thing is genius but especially the theremin). Not sure if they hired a top tier theremin player or if that's synthesis/heavily edited samples but it sounds au naturelle.

I've always found it to be such an interesting and pure instrument in the sense nothing is fixed.

If they haven't already someone should create a "MIDI" (but not "true" MIDI) USB theremin. I'm thinking something that hooks up with/can control (preferably complimentary) VST wave generators where you can muck around with wave shapes, layers of said waves (multichannels), ADSR stuff and general effects (inserts would be awesome for external plugs).

Then a special "MIDI" style PRV setup that's really just a line graph showing chromatic notes and you can manipulate/correct the live theremin performance by editing the lines/curves/amplitude/etc.

But not actual MIDI "notes" (which would defeat the purpose). You could however do a "hard" correct on the performance as needed so your spacey/slippy slidey performance can get jammed into midi paramaters and the glissandos(?) removed (by %) or even turned into a proper MIDI clip for use in other synths.

Then you could have the uber sampling nerds start figuring out how to get the tone of "non fixed" instruments (trombone, classical string instruments such as cello, slide whistles for bapu, etc).

Heck, I think with tech like that they could even figure out how FINALLY make us guitar players obsolete what with our bendiness and shazzwallery.

Oh... and I also want a pony.

The one bapu sent me seems to have died and shrunk and turned into plastic in the mail.
