I've been reading Craig Anderton's articles and reviews since the 80s. I've also found that the best tech support for SONAR comes from other users, friendly folks who have seen the same problems as me, and want to be helpful.
So when Craig began his residence here, it felt to me a little as if a really smart old friend had come to join the conversation, and I looked forward to some good things happening. I wasn't disappointed. Craig's standing in the industry, his personal integrity, his insistence on fact-based discussion and his refusal to pander to malcontents or feed the trolls has raised the level of discourse. The past couple of years the forum has been a great place to hang out, get technical help, hear about new ideas and discover innovative ways of using the software. There are many extraordinary members here, with Craig Anderton perhaps first among equals.
Sadly, we all know the cliches about giant corporations, how out of touch they can be, how much they rely on quarterly financial reports to plan strategy. I mean, seriously, when was the last time you heard a corporate CEO say "Our people are our most valuable asset?" They talked that way for most of the 20th century, but they no longer even pretend to care about employees. Thus it was a shocker to see Mr. Anderton hired to be an "evangelist." It was an optimistic outside-the-box move by Gibson, making his abrupt termination even more depressing: If bringing Craig aboard in that capacity was an unconventional act of faith in the audio and music community, if the work that he did brought us all a little closer to the Gibson/Cakewalk family, then firing him without warning is an unsurprising reminder that corporations are still out of touch, that to them employees remain little more than expenses.
I've gotten a lot of good out of this forum, from Craig, of course, but from many others who jumped in to answer my newbie questions and get me back to making music with SONAR. Thank you Craig, and thank you all. I haven't been much help to anyone in my time here, because I have always felt like a newbie. I still do, but the departure of Mr. Anderton as a full-time bartender here reminds me that the user group is only as good as the users. With Craig's generosity as inspiration, I hope I can be more useful around here.
