Who here has tried an SM7b for capturing elec guitar work?  How do you compare it to an SM57, Senn MD421 or Pr-30?

Needs way more gain! I'll compare it to a 57 tonight and let you know!

I've always heard that an SM7 was a 57 with an extra switch on it. Not so?

Needs much more gain. But has a really nice low end presence. Hard to describe. Kind of like a low end air. Have to hear it for yourself.

Well there's one way to find out - try it.

And make sure you experiment with as many mic positions as you can. Wear headphones and get someone to play while you monitor listening to what the mic picks up and not the sound in the room.

Now wait a minute, this is the recording technique section...correct?  I'm trying to perfect my recording technique and I don't see how on earth you can do that without including the right mic choice for a given technique.

The sm7 is the current favorite at Gearslutz.  It was a wink and a nod post.

The sm7 is a classic dynamic, along w/ the 57 and RE20.  Any of those will work, tho you shouldn't have to filter the 57 so much.
