I have a Eco ALC "water cooled" CPU fan, and it is not very silent.
The fan itself is silent, but the pump is a bit noisy.
This could be because I have my system in a 4u rack DAW - and the rack case is very cheap (say about 60$).

I'll probably be better off with a Noctua D14...

I also agree with you all and you all give the best information regarding better CPU cooler. You and Jim provide a wealth of information to the rest of us and it is much appreciated.

The Noctua NH-D14 heatsink is the best, It comes bundled with two fans. Each vaneaxial fan characteristically SSO bearings, vortex-control notches and techniques like textured arch leading surfaces, all in an endeavor to reduce noise signature.

Thank you for the response........I will change my intended cooler for this Noctua cooler since I have seen it suggested before....

Thank you

If you want to spend the rest of your life configuring a silent pc check out this site. The most up to date info is in the forums.

I found that the fan supplied with the i7-950 was quieter than I expected, so I decided to stick with it.  I only installed it initially as a temporary measure, intending to replace it later with something better.  But even with the (Antec P183) case open it wasn't particularly noisy and with the case closed it is barely audible.

One thing you can do, though it is counterintuitive, is to get the best processor you can afford and underclock it. It will still probably do everything you want it to do and it will run cooler. Gamers always want to overclock CPUs but in the case of the DAW, it might not be the best solution... just sayin'.

Truckermusic:  I have the Noctua DH-D14.  Make sure that your memory is not too tall for this very large cooler.  Go to the Noctua site and they have a list of memory modules that are approved to fit this particular CPU cooler.  The DH-D14 is great, but big and covers the ram slots on some MBs.

Good luck!

Replaced my Coolit ECO A.L.C "pretend-to-be-watercooling-device" with a Noctua DH-D14 yesterday.

Enormous difference. Mostly in sound, I cant hear it. (the PSU is making more noise...)
Idle temps are about 3 degrees lower with the ultra silent profile (about 900rpm fan)

But also - the temperature under  use is about 7 degrees lower.
