Hi there

I bought a 1TB Seagate hard drive for my general internet enabled PC for storage due to running out of space on the OS drive. It's a WinXP machine with 4GB RAM and a P4 CPU. I like to be able to mess around with some music stuff (EZ Keys etc) on the fly whilst doing general browsing. It saves me from firing up my main rig.

I installed and formatted the 1TB drive last Thursday (used it Friday and Saturday) and everything appeared to be going fine....Until it didn't show up in 'My Computer' on Sunday (Eeeeeek!!). It didn't show up in the BIOS either.

I popped the hood and changed the power and sata cables and the drive was then detected again and worked fine for the remainder of Sunday (Whooopee!). However, it's not showing up again tonight after being off for around 20 hours.

I found a thread in the Seagate forums and appear to be not alone. Apparently its a cold boot issue with a buffer not being detected. There's apparently a firmware update which can potentially negate the user's warantee.

Anyone else ever experienced this with HDDs before? Is there anything which can be done or is this a return/refund situation?

I would return it and get something other than Seagate.  There have been several "problem" Seagate models in the last few years.

Thanks for your reply Fireberd.

I may take your advice on that. Also noting the Seagate issues. I wish I'd known before-hand.

I must add that I misread the terms and conditions when I was tired. The firmware update does not negate the warantee. I've just applied the update (whilst the drive was detected) and will wait to see if my drive is detected again tomorrow evening after my PC is off for around 18 hours. I'll just have to keep an eye on it. If the problem arises again, it's going back.
