My yellow lab Elvis is close to 9 now. You and your family are in for a real adventure for the next few years. Lots of energy and mischief. Get him started with chew toys right a way. I also recommend a dog crate for him to sleep in and stay in while he's home alone. Get a big one and put a nice soft blanket or kennel pad for him to lay on.
We learned this lesson the hard way. Elvis chewed the legs off of 4 Cherry dining set chairs, multiple shoes, and as I related here a few years back, figured out how to open the pantry doors. He ate 4 shelves of food. 1 pound of brown sugar, a box of powdered sugar, multiple packages of pasta, croutons, rice, pudding, jello, etc.
She he must be obeyed texted me pics of the carnage and stated "Dont come home without 1) a crate for this @#$^%# dog, or 2) a truck big enough to move all your *(*&%&% and your dog out of this house.
He actually loves his crate. He rests in there even when we are home.
Good luck and enjoy the love this dog will give you and your family.
My go to response when people ask me how I'm doing is "Just trying to be the man my dog thinks I am".
