O.K. here we go.

What if I want different effects on the same track to occur at different times?

For example: for a lead guitar track I want the first 15 seconds to have delay and then on the remaining 15 seconds I want reverb?

How do I control the effects in this way?

Thanks.

I would do it like this, but there are other ways. Add a 'bus'. Insert the effect of choice, and set it as you want. Create a 'send' from the guitar to the bus, and use the automation feature to control when and how much of the effect is used. There's a great thread with screenshots somewhere about the use of busses and sends, I'll be back when I've found it.

Here's that thread - http://forum.cakewalk.com..aspx?&m=1302521&mpage=2 It's based on Guitar Tracks software, but the principle is the same.

These might help too. You'll see that I added the Sonitus reverb to the bus called 'effect send 1'. Then I used sends to control how much signal of various tracks went to that bus. You can automate those sends using the 'write automation' function.

Thanks JamesG1213.

I will give this a go.

So essentially if you have three different reverbs (settings of the reverb, etc.) and you wished to apply them to any track, you just create a bus for each reverb and assign accordingly.

Then control the on/off, intensity, sweep, tails etc. using the Write Automation feature when adjusting those parameters in real time for each application or instance.

I say this only in theory, as I have never done this and am just kinda throwing it around in my head to wrap my brain around it.

So lets say you want to add reverb to a guitar track for the first 30 seconds. Then for the remainder of the track you do not want it.

I would start write automation to record what I am doing.

I would start the track with the reverb on.

I would then ?? then do what to turn it off ?? Do I adjust the send on the bus to zero.

Do I hit bypass on the Sonitus reverb.

Do I turn the mix level of the reverb to zero on Sonitus.

Maybe I should start with going to the thread you gave me.

Thanks again, I so excited to try this, but a little confused.

Yes.

This would depend whether the plug-in effect will let you automate it's features. That's a step up from what I'm suggesting, and I haven't tried it personally.

You adjust the control dial of the send from the track to the bus, yes. You will then have an automation envelope on the track, which you'll see as a dotted line in the track view. You can then fine tune this by zooming in and moving the nodes on the envelope.

As I said, there are other ways to do this, for example you could split the section you want effected and move it onto it's own track. and simply put the desired effect in that tracks effects bin.

Thanks again, I am such a noob.

Not at all.  For years I read the term 'send' on this forum and thought 'Send? Send what?'  Eventually I asked, and someone made the penny drop.

Nice one.

I read the post you gave me.

True or false?

My Sonar 7 Producer Edition is set up with a Master bus.

I then create a separate bus for drums and guitar (for now).

I route the Master bus to my sound card (Motu 8Pre).

I route both bus's I created to the Master bus.

This is the correct way to do this.

Thanks.
