Hello - what is required in order to gain permission, pay fees, etc (besides crediting the writers)  in order to post a cover song on the popular music sites such as Reverbnation, Sound Cloud, Soundclick, etc.

Thanks !

Not wishing to give a 'non-answer' but all those sites have FAQs and info about copyright and posting cover songs.

For example;

To be legit, isn't it Harry Fox Agency, buy a license for "x" number of downloads or streams. Then post your cover song, and if it's on Soundcloud you can see how many times people played or downloaded it.

I think it's like $20 per song and then you pay like 25 cents per download? Something like that.

My favorite part is, let say you pay them 25 cents per download license, but if a streaming service streams one of your songs, you don't get 25 cents, you get .000001 of a cent.

Seems fair.  :)

There are others besides Harry Fox - I think CDBaby has one associated with their site.

But, you might ask other forum members who post cover songs - "Have you ever received a cease-and-desist letter from a copyright holder?"

And I believe the answer to that would be, no.

To avoid bankruptcy, you'd have to explain to them that a stream isn't a download. I haven't checked HFA to see if they have streaming royalties specified.

As for your streaming royalty, you should call a lawyer.  I get $0.0047.  I'll be able to afford a cup of coffee long before you do!
