I'm not sure what is and what isn't dub step but some of what I hear that claims to be is wonderful and some is a pile of old whatsits
but this is great if only for the Dancing
It doesn't really kick in until about 2 minutes in.

Steve

And everyone MUST MUST MUST watch this video. It's amazingly amazing. MUST WATCH!!!!

Yeah, the dude Nonstop is a beast.  Another one of the guys from his dance crew (Glitch) is on So You Think You Can Dance right now too.  They're all incredible dancers.

I will say this, it can be a time consuming process for someone not used to creating that type of music and Sonar is NOT a dubstep friendly program from my brief experience.  There is a LOT of automation involved (assuming you're creating your own sounds and not using samples) and that is one of Sonar's weaker areas.  The broken copy/paste synth automation bug alone will be a pain in the a## and causes more work than necessary.

Also, the weird way Sonar reads out values on the automation envelopes is an issue since dupstep relies heavily on automating LFO's to sync w/ different note lengths based on the bpm.  Sometimes it will give you the proper readouts like 1/8, 1/16, etc.  Other times it will just give a percentage value.  In the case of creating dubstep you will definitely prefer the former.  Someone w/ more knowledge may know a solution for that one, but I haven't figured out the rhyme or reason to it yet.

So, what is the best daw for dubstep?

I imagine it comes down to preference and knowledge of the progam at the end of the day, but from what I've seen/heard most seem to prefer Ableton for whatever reason.  I haven't used it so I don't know but a lot of the tutorials you see are in Ableton.  Also seen a few using FL Studio and Cubase also.

Just really curious here: why would a dubstep group or artist be asking someone else to create his/their music? I am sure you will do a very fine job, but it seems odd that an award-winning dubstep artist would ask someone unfamiliar with the style to create the music. I would think the artist would compose it. There must be a really interesting story behind this. At any rate, best of luck and I am sure it will be great.

Sounds of Blackness is a gospel & inspirational group/choir who had a few big songs in the 90's.  That's why I said it was an odd combination earlier.   That's the part I found strange.  I cannot see Sounds of Blackness requesting a dubstep mix.  That's no where near their target audience.  And their "Unity" album came out in 2005.  Maybe I'm missing something.

sounds of blackness themselves are probably not requesting it. record labels often will have remixers make mixes that seem out of place and will use the hot remixer and genre of the moment. The sounds of blackness had several dance mixes of their songs that were popular in the clubs. i dj'd then and it was natural fit considering many dance music vocalists start off with gospel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kh0gPl5Sr4U

It's also not uncommon in the dance music community for remixes to be made years and sometimes decades after the original. one reason can be it is a cheaper license. I remember owning many records of both famous and underground remixes. Motown released a two record set of Love hangover remixes in 1994. I have heard dance remixes of Led Zeppelin's "baby I'm going to leave you". remixers love flipping records into something completely different than original genre.

It's not that unusual at all.  Oftentimes a remixer is called in when a group is releasing a greatest hits album, to 'update' the music for a younger audience, which widens the potential audience.  And the 'dubstep' sound is considered to be the hottest genre going around right now.

It may seem strange that a group like the "Sounds of Blackness" would want a dubstep mix, but even Maddie (Madonna) and Britney have the dubstep sound in their latest albums. And, strange combinations are the name of the game.  Going even further back, look at Jay-Z and Linkin Park, and Armand Van Helden remixed Tori Amos' Professional Widow, and BT remixed Sarah McLachlan's Silence.  Heck, Junkie XL remixed Elvis's "A Little less conversation", which became a #1 hit as well! These remixes are actually more well know than the original artist songs, which opened up the audience to much wider exposure (as well as their royalties, nonetheless  )

As for hitting the sound of dubtep, I would try the Computer Music Magazine's Ultimate Guide to Dubstep (http://www.musicradar.com/computermusic/the-ultimate-guide-to-dubstep-cm-special-53-on-sale-now-543660).  They sometimes put out genre-specific specials like this showing techniques and the synths that are used.

Edit:  Well,  dubdisciple beat me to it as for the reasons why.  However, the info still stands for reference.

Hmmm.. Probably some rights management then. Try doing a search for "Borgore" and "Nympho". You should be able to find it

" Chregg "So, what is the best daw for dubstep? " lol This is a valid question. If you want to make dubstep as in the original post, then what is the best daw for dubstep friendly production?",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Any DAW will do, its about whether you can program the sounds or not !! and what bladetragic said about being able to snap the automation to note lengths, i have no problem with it, the percentage thing is just how much of say, lfo speed you add, **** it i'll produce a dubstep track using sonar, just to prove ma point !!!!
