The root of DubStep is actually roots reggae, with it's heavy bass lines, usually most songs in the genre are done around 70bpm Someone did an awesome dub step remix of Nirvana "smells like teen spirit" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDjvl3jd-ik

wee tip for you here, the wobbly bass/sounds are mostly fm !!

Wobble bass is very easy to make route the LFO on your synth to the Filter frequency and adjust to taste

dahjah..as much as i love dub reggae and would love to give it all the glory, dubstep's relation to reggae is somewhat non-linear. It's signature sounds aka the notorius wobble bass (disclaimer..longtime fans know dubstep is much more than wobble) was handed down from drum and bass. It's rhythm was derived from two-step garage. Mind you, drum and bass came from jungle which was t osome degree a bastard child of techno and dub reggae. I'm not saying dubstep is not related to reggae dub but it is more like a quadroon than mulatto and defintaly not a full blooded descendent (never thought i would use outdated racial classifications to describe music). Also, if you listen closely, dubstep is actually 140 bpm with many elements played in halftime. I know that sounds like splitting hairs, but it makes a big difference when actually producing.

create a dubstep song...from my limited listening so far dubstep is a special kind of dance music, heavy beat but what really is it?THANKS! - Shawn

Ask my nine year old boy "DJ Dudeness", he's all over that stuff with Ableton Live! Every time I hear dub-step tunes I ask, "Who's playing Lead Dentist Drill?", but that's just me. He's done some cool DMX stuff to his dubstep stuff using DMXIS and ShowBuddy. I guess I don't care for it so much, but that hasn't stopped me from feeding his creativity flame, we just got an AKAI controller for Live this evening at GC. He's in heaven! :-)

Ha ha! I found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uXGVn86PRw&feature=fvwrel

(Speaking of Skrillex)

I'll try to get my hands on the rest of it. Looks interesting and really funny with those old blokes trying to understand his music

EDIT TO ADD: Oh, I found the home page for it - free soundtrack too. http://regenerationmusicproject.com/

dahjah..very true. i rem, ember the first time hearing jungle back when it was dominated by ragga samples. A few big names in roots dub have embraced dubstep. It's an amazing combination. i think I'm going to have to crank up the subwoofer and annoy my co-workers

Sounds of blackness is a gospel group so airy sounds with melodic bass would do. I think!
