Was just having a listen to his solo albums now and I really like them. Perhaps not as immediately engaging as Steely Dan's stuff, and like Fagen's later work more groove-orientated than melody centered, but nonetheless very good songs. The production is of course sublime, and he's got a surprisingly good voice.
I think Steely Dan's later work is underrated too. Two Against Nature was a fabulous album - the writing and arranging is classic Steely Dan.
Almost Gothic is my favorite track on it. Really deserves some deep listening - the arrangement is beautiful. Where they come up with some of those chord voicings I have no idea...
I also like West Of Hollywood. Again, such great chords, and this one has an incredible sax solo in it which blows over some of the most engaging changes I've ever heard. Nice guitar playing by Becker as well.
