Perhaps more for my Pacific Northwest brethren and sisteren . . . but perhaps for other inhabitants of the globe as well . . .

It's in a month. Aug 21st. Are you going??? Where? Is this a once-in-a-lifetime event?

I'm not going. I think it will be 3 minutes of dark, followed by 17 hours of traffic.

If you like Burning Man maybe you'll like this "event"

I dunno. I think the sun god might be angry at my lack of song production.

We had another eclipse here in pdx when I was  little.  I have fond memories of watching it get dark and then light (there was a cloud cover).  Creepiest thing?  This took place in the morning.  As it got dark all the birds stopped singing, then when it got light again, they started back up.  The silence of the birds was sublime.  (please no silence of the lambs jokes) :)

Although I do have friends making plans to stay at another friend's place (who lives in Lincoln City on the Oregon Coast), the news is constantly warning people to just stay home.  They're expecting people to stop on the freeway to watch the event.

I think I'll just avoid streets and take a nap.  I saw the one back in the 80's from So. California and it was a little interesting.  The weirdest thing is what Eph mentioned:  The birds think it's night for a few minutes before waking up and going back to making noise.

Eclipses are like fireworks - I only need to see them one time and then I'm done for the rest of my life.

Yup.

I was in Switzerland during one once and there was all this big build-up and fuss about what a momentous thing it is that you will hardly ever see in your lifetime, blah, blah, blah and how you really shouldn't miss it and how to see it safely blah, blah, blah and all the best eclipse parties that were going on and then on the big day there was dense low cloud everywhere and nobody saw a thing.

But it was a good excuse to down a few jars and chat up some birds though, ya?

Na, the cloud was so low that you couldn't see the birds either.

Anyway, who needs an excuse ???

My little ones are looking forward to this and I haven't experienced it either, so we'll try to be somewhere (not sure where) to experience it (away from crowds for sure).

You could just buy the commemorative stamp with heat-sensitive ink: it changes from an eclipse to a full moon with just the heat of your finger.
