If it's the guy I'm thinking of, he started a thread saying everyone wants to sound like Santana but only very few people were gifted enough to be able to do it. He offered to help the rest of us who couldn't figure it out for ourselves. So, I think it was his obnoxious attitude more than anything else that rubbed people the wrong way. As far as Santana's sound... I used to play with a guy who played an Ibanez Artist through a Peavey Bandit with no effects and he sounded more like Santana than Santana did. It's not about the amps and settings, it's about the phrasing.
