Tony Rice, (I went through a big Tony Rice phase) Tommy Emmanuel (Tommy uses a lot of mikes to record his sound) Frank Gambale when he is playing acoustic and that is a rare and beautiful thing:

Frank is one of the finest acoustic guitarists on the planet. And albums like Eagles etc where the acoustic guitars are just beautifully recorded. Listen to the rhythm guitars, that is the key. I am sure I will think of more. Any well recorded Nashville album etc..

I'm a Gamble fan...I'll have to check his acoustic stuff out.  Yeah, the Eagles, I don't know why I didn't think of them.  I'm looking to record some acoustic rhythm stuff so the Eagles should be a great reference for that type of music.  Thanks for the tips.

For now, I've decided to go with Tommy Emmanuel's "Little by Little" CD.  The playing is excellent, but more to the point, the recording quailty is stunning.

For acoustic material, I recommend Allison Kraus and also another good CD is TRIO from Linda R, Dolly P, and Emmylou H...... they hired the best acoustic pickers and recorded them well. I have the first TRIO CD  (they did at least 2) and the tone is superb.

A lot of Steve Hackett's solo material is well written, well played, and well recorded

Bay of Kings is a great listen.

You could also use some quality recorded guitars from sample libraries.
ottomh, Big Fish has some freebies.

Led Zeppelin III and Physical Graffiti.

I also like The Tea Party, tracks like Winter Solstice, Shadows on the Mountainside and the Badger. It's like modern Led Zeppelin.

Depends what style of guitar playing you mean.  If it's fingerpicking, you should have a listen to "The Nine Maidens" by John Renbourn or disc 2 of Richard Thompson's "You, Me, Us?".

Superb clarity right across the guitar frequency spectrum.

I'll give them a listen.

What about strumming stuff?  I was listening to the radio on the way into work this morning and was surprised at how good Greenday's acoustic strumming in "21 Guns" sounds.  Are there any acoustic strumming examples that you'd recommend?
