"I don't believe a record is ever sold or not sold because a hi-hat was slightly harsher or because it was 2db higher or lower." Ken Scott, Mix Magazine Interview, July 2012

Then again, he can afford to say that, right?

Hmm, did someone call your high-hats harsh? That's just wrong

I don't recall hearing a hihat on a recording that actually sounds like what one really sounds like.  Just saying.

To be fair, they may often sound a lot like what they actually sound like at the place where the microphones are, it's just most folks never hear them from there. And also they may sound like they sound when heard from multiple such places at once, which we never actually do either. In such cases that doesn't mean it's not a real representation of the sound, just a real representation that we can't normally experience.

Though obviously drums are often fairly to very significantly EQ'd because they are such massive frequency suckers. I imagine it's more likely today that they would be heavily EQ'd (meaning not a special effect in this case) than would have been in Ken's prime.

At the risk of being the oddball,  I MAY have bought the Crazy Eyes album by Poco years ago because of the hi hat sound.  I can say I would be more likely to by a CD these days for the kick drum sound though.
