Not sure if this comes under technique but some peoples environment helps creativity is this true and if so what is the best environment.

I'd like to know the same thing.

I keep thinking about the 'poor starving artist' trip that sometimes is flung around..whether that really holds up.

I know, for myself, that when I was depressed I really was not into any kind of creative activity...some may be..but me? Nuh uh....

I'm not sure about production, but I do think it can have an impact on songwriting and performance.

Here are just a couple examples from the bigs, that might not have turned out the way they did without the "tragic" environment they were in at the time!

Phil Collins Face Value: Listen to the emotion in the writing and the performance of those songs. He was going through a terrible divorce at the time and it was tearing him apart - and it comes up in full force on this album!

Eric Clapton Unplugged: Nobody should ever have to face the tragedy Eric faced in 1990 (loss of Stevie Ray Vaughan and his road manager on one of his helicopters, then worse - his own son), but he did - and he unleashed his emotions on this entire album, highlighted with the performance of "Tears in Heaven".  Most people thought this would be the end of Clapton since he had such a history with drugs and alcohol - but instead he reached for his guitar and gave us a real glimpse into his pain ...

From my own experience, I wrote one of my nicest pieces of guitar music at 6:00AM sitting in the common room of a Bed & Breakfast in St. Agreve France - nestled in the foothills of the French Alps. It was a very tranquil piece, exactly how I felt at the time (which is very rare)

I guess for me anyway, emotions contribute more to song writing than the environment.  Now the environment might stir some particular emotion, but it still comes from what I am feeling.

Maybe you are coming at this from what kind of environment produces the best tracking.  To that I would say a comfortable environment with easy access to all of the tools that are needed to produce music.  Again for me, the more things that I have set up and ready to go, the easier it is to record at a moments notice when that inspiration hits.

Experience and environment should be motivations rather than or reying on skill to produce the best. we can be a bit mechanical i think.

I can't say for sure which environments would be best.  But I do know what would be worst - the occasional chaos that is my home life.  I can't possibly be creative if the wife's upset because our two young sons are beatin' on each other.

Maybe I just answered the question:  the best environment is the one without external distractions.

Turn up for work, wherever that happens to be.

Nice surroundings just make me wanna enjoy the surroundings.

The single biggest impact to me is my own mental state.  If I'm tired or distracted, I can't do my best work.  If I'm rested and focused, the rest of the environment is somewhat irrelevant.

I'm not sure the Op understands his question ... but the responders have convincing thoughts.

Thus this seems an excellent thread ... for him and me.

Every environment (experience) has + and -  ... aspects.

Distraction 'sometimes' helps me force completion.

I get a lot done with Danzi, wilst I'm in a motel (Days Inn with a decent web connection).

While alter'd environments (drug, alcohol, divorce, tragedy, success, etc.) ... probably don't inhibit the muse ...

After she (the muse) squalls ... she needs a sober place to put the pieces together (in my case) ... and/or allow other muses to help her 'get-it-together'.

Again, Phil Collins seems a great analogy for you and I (per Codamedia) ... (except that I much prefer some of you guys over Phil Collins, establishing today's music)
