I also dragged the MP3 into Sonar, as a reference track. I really must stop listening to stuff with my Sennheiser earbuds. I mean, they are better than the usual rubbish that ships with mp3 players, but I've just listened to the original, in Sonar, using my KNS-8400 headphones, and it's different again. For some reason, I hadn't picked up that the drone slowly pans from left to right and back throughout the piece.
 
Anyway, I'm having a play. Can't say I'll come up with anything decent, and, let's face it, your original is just fine really.
