The opening 30 seconds of this song have been sitting on my hard drive for close to 15 years. I could never find my way to the next bit. One of my resolutions for 2016 was to force myself to take every song bit I start or open from an existing project and make something out of it. So, after 8 weekends of grinding through this song, this is what I came up with. I think it turned out better than I could have hoped for and I've found that sticking with something to the end can work, lol.
 
This is a rock instrumental, with some jazzy/fusion/orchestral stuff thrown in.

The change-up in the 1:30 area was pretty spectacular. Your string lines at 2:50 are a killer piece of composing. The slightly funky groove rhythm coming in around 4:00, great transition.  The tom panning at the end is perfect.
 
So, about the only thing I can think of would be a little more lower midrange eq added back to the snare, which sounds like you hpf'd it around 800 hz? I dunno, I'm trying really hard to find something that could be improved. It's so good.
 
I think everybody on this forum should listen to this.

Nice job Dan, it has a furry claw tapping groove.  The transitions are quite smooth, sounds very much like a soundtrack over titles that move with the changing scenes, thanks for sharing.

This is no exception. love how the idea you started with from 15 years ago has essentially turned into one of your folky orchestral pieces bolted on top of a rock rhythm section. great ideas. superlative mix. think this must be in the top ten things I've ever heard posted on here.

Reminds me of a blend of Kansas, Eddie Jobson, and Vangelis...this is where I live!

Thanks Tom!  No, I didn't HPF the snare, but I did cut the low mids on it using the SSL G. I thought it was too boxy there. So, good ears, but I like it without the boxiness.
