  • I was fooling around with my snare mic and...

... now I think I want one of those '57s that have been modded with the right angle fitting.

I found a sweet sounding spot for the 57, so I just need something that fits real nice.

Is there any other mic that I might consider?

Sometimes I use a SM81... but a traditional straight mic isn't going to fit where I want it now.

Sometimes I use a Sennheiser  MKH70 as a near far over the shoulder mic to get the snare sound the drummer hears.

Thanks.

I've been wanting one of those modded jobbers too but I didn't want to pay that much for a 57.  However, I also know that the amount of time I spend modding one and not making it look homemade will cost me more in revenue than what I will spend.  :)

Thanks for reminding me of this model.  I haven't wanted to mic up a kit because my Iso booth is too darn small and getting in and out with a kit in there is a pain in the backside.   But this same mod would come in handy on a guitar cabinet as well.  You could tuck the stand in there a little closer and free up floor space.

What about that Senn side address dynamic that they always tout for guitar cabs?  That might be nice on snare.

I wonder if anyone here has tried that?

I have some of the Sennys and they are fine... but they get kinda big when you place them out over the snare.

I'm going to buy one of the Granelli mod'ed '57s today.

Now the question is, Am I going to add the Tab Funkenwerk transformer mod to it.

I haven't had my kit set up for a while and I set it up again last week. I had a lot of fun searching out mic placement last night.

I think I'm at a point where I can have a semi permanent drum kit set up and ready to track when I call up a SONAR template, so I'm willing to go the extra mile an get just the right mic set up.

Last week I tracked with Kick Snare HH and 2 -OH and I had wished I had spent more time on the snare. It was relaxing to have it set up and waiting for the guests.

I want to work towards making that situation optimal.

The 57 is ubiquitous because it works.

An AKG C414 B-ULS more often used underneath but I've liked them used on top too.

Thanks Jon.

Thanks Mike.

I think I can have a friend bring out a 56A, but I guess I'm figuring out that I am pretty sold on the '57.  I just had to remind myself.

I've never tried the 414 on the bottom... I'll give that a try.

I'd really like to learn more about tuning the snare so it only rattles when I want it too.

I've also got an urge to buy a brass tambourine... like a bad urge. That's good no?

Thanks Jon.

I just talked to a buddy... he's bringing out half a dozen of his favorite live-guy snare mic alternatives to the '57 today and we'll have some fun with it.

He didn't have a 56a handy.

I've got a TAMA snare... is there anything special I might want to learn about it?

I installed some type of third party upgrade snare on it recently and it sounded great in the play room... now I have it in the studio and am just thinking about the recorded tone and I want to re evaluate.

I kinda like a tight woody tone... but I think other folks have wildly varying ideas.

I think I'll be adding an extra snare or 2 to the place.

Thanks again.

Nothing that I didn't already mention.  My old Tama just had a standard offset cam to throw the snare off and on, as simple and effective as you can get.
