Holding On To Faith.

Here is the latest song from the band.  Let us know what you think of the mix on this song.  Interestingly, this was written from the Bass Guitar; I don't recall ever, having done so in the past.

Performed by Scandalous Grace
Words & Music: Michael Hanson
Michael Hansen: Lead Vox, Bass, Acoustic Guitar, Electric Rhythm, 1st Lead guitar, End Lead Guitar, Drum programing.
Sean Peifer: BGV, Main Guitar Solo, Electric Rhythm
Reece Bain: B3 Organ and BGVs.

Loved this!  Only nit is the guitar lead parts.  I'm a guitarist so I'm a bit of a perfectionist.  I'd make them mirror the melody more.  Other than that, this is a great song!

<Edit>  Rik and I posted at same time.  yes the intonation with the lead is a problem.  I'd mirror the melody of the verses more (as a guide).  As far as intonation of the voice, it's endearing in a Bob Dylan kind of way.

Hi Michael, just listened to your new tune, actually a couple of times just to be sure and if you don't mind some criticism, it sounds like there are some serious intonation problems here, especially the electric guitar. Also that last solo almost sounds if it's pasted in the wrong place.  Sorry to be so critcal, it sounds like a very rough demo as it is now.

I almost posted the same thing last night but thought it might be tired ears so held off till this morning . There is a tuning anomaly in there, I think the elec guitars are out of tune slightly with the organ.

Thanks a bunch for listening Rikkie.  I am discussing some of your comments with the Band and we are looking at fixing some of these tracks.  When you hear the intonation issues, is it mostly with the electric rhythm guitars?

It sounds like your issues with last solo are mainly timing related.

David- Thanks a bunch for listening to this song.  I am thrilled that you really like it.

The Dylan reference threw me a little.  I am often told that I sound very Petty-like, but it has been 10-12 years since anyone referenced Dylan.  Dylan is one of those references where I never know whether it is a compliment or a knock; I have heard it used both ways.  Zimmerman, incidentally, grew up about 30 miles away from my home town, on the Iron Range.

There are actually 3 different solo's being played on 3 separate guitars for this song.  I have the 1st Intro solo on my MIA Strat.  Sean has the middle and main solo on his LP.  For the Outro solo, I play my Blackie Strat partscaster.  Narrowing down which solo you are hearing tuning issues with would be helpful.  I am very religious about checking tuning before hitting "record". I think maybe my final solo could be reworking into timing which fits better with the song. I was doing quite a lot of bending on that solo, as well.  Could be that I was a little flat of a full bend on an area or two.

James- Thank you bro for listening.  As always, I greatly appreciate your ears.  We will check some of these trouble spots as a band and make some adjustments.

Dylan or Petty are more meant where the style is hard to classify or sui generis.  You have a style that everyone will know is immediately you, so I wouldn't try to change that by goose-ing notes here and there.

As far as the solos, I would simply tell all involved to stay closer to the melody of the verses as a guide instead of going outside the harmonies.  Sorry I can't be more specific, but some of the bends here and there and even some of the intentional notes are too outside of the design of the song. By intonation, not sure if Rik meant the actual tuning of the instrument or the solos.

Check the main solo at 2:50-51 and 2:56-57, it could be wrong passing notes, or that a string has gone out of whack, but there's something amiss there.
