I read somewhere (dont know if it is true) that the start of the 'red' on analogue meters is the equivalent to -20dB on a digital meter. My previous experience came from recording on cassette decks in my youth where you always wanted to be peaking into the red, but i soon learned to leave plenty of head room on digital levels.

Its a shame digital meters dont start their red at -20dB. it would stop a lot of confusion

This is great thanks for all the tips! Such a big difference going from drumming to being behind the console. At work now, can't wait to get home and try some more recording. Is there a way to post music clips so I can have people critique my recording/mixing?

SoundCloud is a good place to post music. Many here use SoundClick, but a free account there is limited to 128kb/s MP3s no larger than 10MB. SoundCloud gives you a total of 2 hours for free with no filesize or bitrate limits.
