Rimshot

I don't look so hot trying to hit high notes out of my range.   I have, however worked with artists that needs some performance help with lack of expression while signing.

Rimshot

This means you're possibly straining to hit those high notes. I have just begun singing lessons again and in only two lessons, have learned to hit the highest of my range (which has already increased by at least 3 semi-tones in two weeks - up to a B4) without straining at all. Your mouth and face needs to stay relaxed during the whole process. When I used to hit high notes, my face would contort super ugly as I'd try and hit the notes. It seemed to help. But once I have learned to activate my muscles more appropriately, everything is changing! It's all about tilting your larynx - or so I've been told so far.

So I would suggest a few lessons from a great teacher could be really beneficial for you!

I wouldn't say I make weird faces.... But I find that my hands are usually "twirling the notes" in the air.  That's a little odd.  :)

I thought you were moving to the island?  Is that soon to be?

That had to be temporarily put on hold. It's still the long-term plan, though.

Channeling Joe Cocker, are you? I don't think that's odd at all. Mick Jagger does it. Stevie Nicks does it, too. It's quite natural for hands to participate. Much more practical than, say, dancing.

For me, my hands are usually employed as headphone clamps so no invisible-orchestra conducting is possible. However, I'm most comfortable playing the piano or organ while singing, even if the keyboard isn't being recorded.

I'm going to try the arm flailing and scrunch face thingy.

I tried the Pete Townsend windmill thing one time and near about took my fingernail off when the string caught under it..... dang that hurt.... I gave up trying to be Pete that very moment.

I know for a fact I made a face on that one.
Townshend had worse luck. He once impaled his hand on the tremolo bar.

Man I can't even do contortions like Joe Cocker, let alone sing.

When I sing in public ... my eyes shut their lids ... despite the fact that I should be staring intensely at their faces -- LOL!

When I sing in private ... my eyes shut their lids ... and I bump into the pop-shield ... now I hold the pop-shield like its a frisbee -- LOL!

That's interesting Philip? I'm a singer, and a pretty good one? But I can't sing with my eyes open in public? Even in a small setting? I can't explain it? But it seems like you understand.

It's easy to turn into Ray Charles and slam your head into the mic or pop shielf, definitely.  But.... gotta take the mic technique seriously though. If you are serious about recording it like it should sound, you should be able to control your distant to/angle from the mic just as you control your picking technique to manage tone and volume. It's tough, but gotta do it.
