  • Climb! - a song based on a climb of Grand Teton (V2)

My cousin told me he and friend climbed Grand Teton.  I was floored so I wrote down some of the things he told me.  Later I came up with this song and based it on his trek.  There is a line containing the lyrics "Belly Roll and Crawl."  He told me this is a maneuver you have to do along a narrow ledge that has a 2000 ft drop straight down.

Please enjoy.  As always let me hear your feedback, balance issues, what you listened on is always helpful.  Thanks.

Nice, well performed song and creative chord changes John. I like it.
Mix-wise, all of the elements are there but the overall sound is a bit 'middly' to my ears - I'm not sure if that is in the mix or a mastering thing. Sorry to be vague but I can't put my finger on it.

Good tune! A driving energy propels it. Vocals especially seem up to snuff!

I thought the mix was decent but maybe heavy in the low mids. Did you eq some of the top off of the bass g? Is that adding any mud to the middle?

If you are compressing on the master bus, maybe back off that a little bit?

Your song's chorus has a nice hook!

Daryl and Tom,
Thanks for the input.  I'm looking forward to get into my little studio and checking this issue out.  I think it may be the bass guitar but I will experiment.  I rarely use mix bus compression but on this tune there is, albeit ever so slightly.  Slow attack and fast release settings.  The needle is barely moving.  I just wanted to corral all stuff on this tune a little.

Superb!  The mix is great and your performance(s) are fantastic -- one of the best things I've recently heard on the forum.  That instrumental bridge section is inspired.  Your vocals are also very good and the guitar tones are spot on. Absolutely no crits on this.  Hope you get some traction with it.  !!

Thanks, Allan! It was fun to record and my cousin's story was inspirational. In that sense it was a good mix.

I made some tweaks.  I went back to the mix and EQ'd the bass a little differently.  I cut a little 440Hz out of the guitar bus, and in the mastering (Ozone 7).  All the moves were ever so slight but I can hear an accumulative effect for the good.  Unfortunately, only I AB'd the two versions so I hope I'm right in what I am hearing...

Nice song, and it tells the story you wanted to tell very well. I never heard the first mix, but this latest is pretty good.

Nice tune.  Only possible recommendation would be to brighten up the vox.  The rest of the mix is middy and bright, but as a result the vox seems slightly dull.  Nothing serious, just a thought. Otherwise cool song!
