Check the AKG D1Just got mine and all Im seeing on research, I dont think I went wrong. It was either that or a Beta52A. They say the D112 needs very little EQing compared to anything else out there. Havent checked that out yet and cant wait to see how it actually goes.  You can find 'em on eBAY for about $120 new from a decent USA place just have to search for them. I believe they are about $200 new

The kick has got a front head on it with a sound hole for micing/port.  One pillow inside to muffle and sounds pretty good to the ear.  It's just recording like crap.  Last night I finally got one of my band members to come over and play the kit while I moved mic'sand played with levels (I had been trying to do this all by myself) and I was able to get it sounding better but it's still not great.

Are you SubMixing the kit before the interface?  One thing you can do when by yourself is place mic as best you can, record the Kick and feed it back through your mixer from Sonar, Loop the recorded Kick Section and EQ the board to get the tone you want for recording out of the board. Then make sure you put everything back as you had it routed before.  (Just my lazymans way of doing it but works good when in a pinch.

For kick, I've found that a Studio Projects C1 sounds terrific on many kits. Don't be afraid to go outside the realm of dynamic mics, many modern condensers can handle the sound levels and that high frequency bump that lots of cheap Chinese mics have sounds great on kicks.

Hope this helps on your kick. I have used a lot of different mics on kicks over the years. The one that stays on the stand the most is an old AKG Pro25. It was specially designed by AKG for bass frequencies. I had a session in Kennesaw,Ga. at a very nice studio with avery nice kit and mic setup. I just was not getting what I wanted from the kick. I replaced their kick mic, which shall remain nameless, with my Pro 25. The next day when I walked in the engineer met me in the room with a big smile on his face. After he had heard the work from the day before, he made the boss cut him a check and he drove into Atlanta and bought 3 of them! We keep in touch from time to time. He said he has great results using them on his toms as well. Even micing bass rigs. Not trying to sound like it is the mics world equivalent of a swiss army knife, but it is very good at what it does. I don't even know if they make them anymore, but it is worth the search. They were very affordable as well.

Thanks for the input guys.  I've got the kit tuned up pretty nicely,  I am well aware of the importance of that.
Mike I appreciate the tip!

Sidroe-  Is this the mic you are talking about?  The Audio technica pro25?
http://www.instrumentpro.com/P-AUDPRO25  I can't find anything on a Akg pro 25?
