Depending on the delicacy and complexity of the single malt, I would prefer it first I think. If you're chasing beer, does the quality of the whiskey (within reason) really matter?
If I was necking down some Tennants Lager (

) like they do here, then I'd agree, may as well go for a supermarket own-brand blended scotch, but I'm thinking a couple of good ales, like an 'Old Crafty Hen' something like that, maybe one with dinner, one after, then a very nice, not too peaty malt about an hour or two later, as a nightcap. I don't regard that as 'chasing' the beer, it's just rounding off a pleasant weekend evening.
