As a side note, I heard an interview with Jah Wobble a couple of weeks ago. He mentioned that when he met the Pistols he was most impressed by Glen Matlock, really rates him as a bass player.
As far as I can tell mate, Glen seemed to write most of the music and John the lyrics (despite the fact that all the Pistols received writing credits).
It seems no coincidence that after him and then Lydon were fired, most of their output consisted of cover songs/adaptations, aside from a few originals written by Steve Jones.
For obvious commercial/image reasons, I don't think he was encouraged to be a 'musician' in the Pistols. His abilities were nonetheless always apparent, but shone through more when he formed The Rich Kids.
And he plays with his fingers and not a pick. Bapsi will tell you that is much more difficulter
