If mine gets too hot it stops bubbling or lava'ing or whatever. I plugged mine into an old X10 lamp dimmer and dim it a just a little after it warms up. Otherwise, after a few hours it just collects at the top. FWIW, mine is about 6 months old.

I had one as a teen and eventually it just stopped doin' its thang.
 

 
It happens to all of us with age, but apparently you can get some little blue pills that help with the problem.
