yea definitely headphones while recording :-)
that's really interesting about the usb cable. i'll probably order one when i order my new balanced cables. might as well.

YA it has something to do with both the power and the digital signal and something called the "pin 1 issue" Sorry I can't seem to find any links to a thread, I'm sure it was here in the hardware forum,, might have been the computer form..?

Just wanted to check in and let everyone know, the balanced XLR to 1/4" cables I bought off Sweetwater did the trick. I guess the ones I got from my friend were just old and crappy.

Yep, cables are boring, but pretty critical to good sound. And they are a good investment. I haven't had to buy a new cable for 15 or 20 years because I bought all good stuff in the first place. Beldon/Swicthcraft/Mongami and Nuetrix.
