I'm talking about VMR, VCC, VBC, VPC, FG-X, Custom series, etc.... I was browsing through these looking for a Waves SSL alternative, and it struck me just how arbitrary the module components seem to be.
First, let me start by saying that I'm actually pretty impressed by the Slate Digital line and have heard great things about the analogue "warmth and grit" they can add to a mix....
What I don't understand is why Slate didn't just call it VMR (Virtual Mix Rack) and offer all the rest as rack modules. Once you get past the marketing, isn't that how they actually function? Or am I missing some obvious reason why they have to be promoted separately?
I suspect they're marketed this way to make sure we get how "special" each package is -- how much work went into the R&D of each one. But to a prospective buyer like me, it's all rather confusing, and makes me appreciate Waves' approach to the SSL 4000 that much more.
Or, I could just throw my hands in the air and accept that if I want to cover all the bases from Slate, I'll need to go for the Everything Bundle. $200 a year for all the Slate FX seems reasonable -- and is still cheaper than buying the Waves SSL.
I guess I just answered my own question. Well played, Steven Slate. Well played.
