What I don't understand, in this type of instance, is why entertainers would intentionally go out to alienate half their audience?

Not much worry about that - nowhere close to half, I suspect.  I'm pretty sure Trump followers tend by far to be more in the Ted Nugent camp than the Roger Waters camp.  And lest someone cry "violation of form policy - no politics", please consider this to merely be a sociological observation, not a political position statement.

Musos and actors should stick to their trade and leave the political comments alone..
just cause they are elevated in status that us normal PEE-ONS does not give the license to spout their "views"
I include those on both sides of the spectrum

Um, they get the exact same license as the rest of us. 
 
And why should political messages, as opposed to say misogynistic ones, get special treatment?

John Lennon?
Punk music?

Sure but who hears or listens to what I say?? really drew you think its an equal playing field?
I say something an I am branded with labels..
they say something and ohh its the gospel...
